Genre Research

Introduction

I am going to be doing research into the genre of my brief. The main reason for doing this is to highlight and analyse the codes and conventions of media texts in order to help me with my project to display my messages and to effectively show off my skills as a media student.
The genre of my text will be music videos and I will be looking at the conventions of 3 media products of the same genre.

Research:

Product 1:

  • * Black and White, conventions linked to seeing things in “black and white” - seeing things for what they are.

  • * Coke bottle being the first act of “death”, shows how a simple act of littering can cause great damage

  • * Shows different issues. Climate change, deforestation, littering etc.

  • * Humans are all skinny, ribs showing, look pale/ill.

  • * Humans dehumanised with animal-like features i.e. long necks.

  • * Shows humans on tv as beautiful and wondrous, then shows the reality of what animals go through.

  • * Protests - shows that those who protest about the impact on animals are neglected and ignored. That they are not being listened to and the message isn’t going through to those in charge (the bourguase)

  • * Humans facing extinction, and yet no one cares or will do anything about it

  • * Shows our greed, that money is more important and that they neglect the negative impact we cause

  • * Extinction as an attraction in zoo’s is what we do now to animals like Dodo’s, showing that we do not take care of those animals and take actions to prevent those passing away.

  • * Presents the message that we must do something, since it explores the destruction of the environment, climate change and species extinction from different perspective.

  • * Seeing the bears fight each other was so impactful, realising that people do this every single day

It is in the same way both smart and disgusting to have to switch the roles to make people pay attention to this! Most selfish Human brains aren't able to feel enough empathy for anyone but themselves. So seeing animals die like that doesn't care them, only seeing yourself die would cause at least any reaction. Humans are so selfish that for us to see the harm we do to this planet we have to turn the viewpoint around and focus everything back onto ourselves again due to our self-centredness. This video not only brings back the focus on what we, as a society, must do but also what as a race must do. Being Humans, we have the power to take or nurture. By taking what we do not own is despicable. This land was not given to us, it was taken by governments and economies for false currencies and power. This video now only opens the eyes of the audience through its codes and conventions, but also brings us to focus that there IS a problem, and only we, as the people who have a voice, can do something.

Product 2:

Dear Future Generations: Sorry:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRLJscAlk1M

  • * Desert, middle of nowhere. One man, One voice.

  • * “sorry” being repeated, to show that it is something we must ALL say, and that we have really messed up

  • * “Amazon Desert” from “Amazon Rainforest”, explaining trees to show that in the route we are going, there will be no trees. How disgusting we have destroyed them with “brutal machines” for money with leaves on it.

  • * Using statistics and facts to not only explain to the future generation, but the current generation to wake up and realise what we are doing.

  • * “profit above people”, “greed above need” and “rule of gold over the golden rule” showing that we chose ourselves about everything else around us.

  • * Camera angles change to reflect the “different points of view that you can look at when it comes to the environment”

  • * Calling destruction “Progress” instead of the truth.

  • * In 2015 he wore a face mask, now during this pandemic 5 years later, EVERYBODY is wearing face masks.

  • * ISIS > ice is melting

  • * He does not accept this fate, looking at the root and not the branches of government and corporations. Very powerful to show that we can do something

  • * Talks about extinction, if we do not act

  • * He stopped the music. Because the environment was more important than the music, the words were more important than the song. The music didn’t matter how beautiful or how impactful it was, it was the WORDS that delivered the message and that created the meaning. The WORDS are the driving force and what we should listen to.

Somebody needed to take a step and confront the governments who ruin our world just for money. You cannot buy a new, healthy Earth with money. We need to stand together and save our planet, our home and, like the artist said, save our planet, we save ourselves. There is no second chance in life, we live in this planet that gives us all we need to survive so why destroy it and waste it
The planet dies, we die, animals die, plants die and many more because of a human mistake? Life is not a video game, you cant restart what you do is get one chance but make it worth it. So we as humans need to stand up and start acting if we do it together we will succeed and that will change our lives in good forever

Product 3:

  • * Shows a news article on climate change, and how no one is watching nor caring, a man standing blankly.

  • * Trash can knocked over, and they tell a man to pick it up when they’re the one that knocked it over, being rude when it is their fault, that they don’t care about the littered. 3 of the 4 boys leaving and only one staying.

  • * Human in a beautiful scenery, as if to show earth without human impact of construction, infrastructures and destruction.

  • * Celebrities playing animals to show that they are beautiful, unique and they are living and existing, in a unique way(?)

  • * Despite some adult-content and swearing, it shows a powerful message that people should care, and that they all love the earth.

  • * Making a comedy with countries history, animals and shows that their planet is to be loves and cared for.

  • * In the link, includes information how to save the earth, shows caring

  • * Shows that to continue what we are doing (such as mating, marauana, using the internet etc.) we must care and look after the planet, and that it is a very important part of our existence

  • * “are we gonna die?”, “we might die, i’m not going to lie to you (…)”, “unless we get our **** together now”

  • * Leonardo Decaprio, talking about how he’s done a lot for the environment, to tell people to go research what has been done and what they can do.

  • * “12 years to turn this environmental crisis around” - 12 YEARS IS NOT LONG!

  • * Celebrity endorsement is VERY important, that these celebrities care about the environment so you should too.

  • * Justin Briber, Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande, Kevin Heart and Leonardo Decaprio as well as many other celebrities to get people to care, because their favourite celebrities care.

Ignoring the celebrity endorsement, the message is powerful. If we do not, as said, “Get our **** together now” then we could, as a society suffer greatly from our own acts of selfishness. We forgive those countries who have done wrong, but we need those countries to all come together, and to help the environment. To help save the world and the planet and that we, as society, can do this. These animals and our human acts can only survive if we look after our beautiful world. In comparison to other music videos i have and will be looking at, this is the most entertaining and makes the earth look beautiful. But as i continue my research, i will look into the uglier side of the world and the effects we have had onto it.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, i have realised that to create a successful video for my political message, i must concentrate on angles as well as how i present the message. Product 1 has a strong storyline and the message is clear, the way i should present my product is to bring concern for my target audience of older siblings and young parents, to make people aware that the younger generations are at risk of losing their future. From Product 2, the apology to the future generations shows that soon we may not be able to provide the needs of the new generations. And from this i have learned the possible camera angles i could use, from just one man, standing and telling a story it shows me that i could be simplistic, to use simple angles to portray my message in different lights. And finally, product 3, the most light hearted spreads a message of loving the earth and all it provides, asking people to help and disclosing links in their bios to show people how they can help. Through this i have decided that i could use my music video to not only display a message but also show people how they could help either via showing within the narrative, or at the end of the video with a small message saying where my audience can go (websites) to help.

From this Genre Research, i can show Genre through my codes and conventions, using camera angles to show certain messages and using a strong story line to show how important this protest is. That people should do something and be vocal. From this Research, i have found that all 3 videos have a strong story line and denote clear messages, which is what i must strive to do in my own music video. My music video will be narrative and will follow a structure clear to my audience, in hopes to engage my target audience.
