NEA Planning task 1 - My Audience

NEA Planning task 1 - My Audience

Introduction:

In this research I have conducted research regarding my music video, in hopes to get a range of feedback from my audience to make a music video effected for my chosen target audience. Through this research I hope to obtain an idea of how I can move forward in creating a music video suitable for the audience.

Research

Question 1:

Having had 10% under the age of 16 (3/30 participants), they are outside of the target audience of the music video. However, I believe that this can be accepted due to the fact that the people who answered the question will be 16 by the time production of the music video is completed, meaning they will be within the target audience. Having this fact in mind, this survey can be accepted and I will continue to analyze the results of this survey.

Question 2:

Asking my audience on their gender, I made sure to have a balance of male and female so that the target audience is equal, as my target audience does not specify on gender, and I believe by having equal female and male participants within the survey will be beneficial due to different beliefs on the environment that can be viewed dependant on gender.

Question 3:

The majority of answers were pop, alternative. Taking a comment from the website “The Atlantic”, “The musicians were genre benders, stitching patches of hard rock, hip-hop, and new wave to a veil of soft, velvety pop.”, Therefore, using Linkin Park who are genre benders, having used rap, pop, rock etc. Make up a large portion of what my participants have voted for. Therefore, being an acceptable band to use.

Question 4:

Having majority (90% - 27/30) of my participants caring about the environment, I believe that this is acceptable to state that the environmental protest that I will be conducting is acceptable as people have realized that there is an issue, and my music video will be for both those who want to help, and those that need to realize that there is an issue with the environment.

Question 5

The majority, again, stated that it was a good way to promote the environment,  one person who voted no commented, “not many watch the music video as they would most likely have it on it the background of what their doing” which is something many of the no’s agreed with, however, it can be argued that for this protest, the song is also important, to get people thinking. If an audience knows the meaning of the song, the lyrics will make an audience thinking, Therefore this music video can be accepted as having reason.

Question 6:

Having had only 1 person state that the environment does not affect the youth for reasons that they are young and do not know of responsibility, it is safe to say that the protest does have significant meaning for the youth and that it is a cause to fight for.

Question 7:

Many again stated no, and I don’t know, (15/30) and the other half stated yes (15/30), from this result I can conclude through looking at the comments that there are two sides to the argument, on one half the music is what brings people together, the music video is just a form of promotion or art, whereas others state that music videos are a part of life and that people would watch the music videos of their favorite artists. I can henceforth conclude that when taking out the “I don’t knows”, the majority of people voted yes, and that it is a good communication to the age groups.

Question 8:

Using Skirky’s End of audience, this was a Mutiple choice, meaning that out of those that voted no, 23/30 voted for a reaction, henceforth, the end of audience theory shows that as a an music video, we must have forms of ways for our audience to communicate, I will use this research within my website, to make sure that there are forms of interaction to allow my audience to inteact effectively.

Question 9:

As a multiple choice, many people voted for most of them, giving other examples as, Global Warming, Hunting endangered species and Quarrying & mining. Therefore, people are aware of the issues within the environment especially as no one skipped this question.

Question 10:

Having people state that they would do something shows that there is a pure reason for this music video and that people will help and I, as a producer, must make sure that there is a way for these audiences to be able to interact with the product. To make sure that those who will help have the ability to do so.

Conclusion:

What I found useful about the information collated is that there is an active audience available to make sure that the protest is pushed forward, and that there is a strong audience who will support the products I wish to create. Through the comments gathered, I have decided to keep my target audience, as it is clear that some of the people I had surveyed would not be within my target audience range as I am looking for environmentalists who are active within the media. A passive audience will not work for my protest as the only way for Environmental change is an active audience, and unless they are watching youtube videos and keeping up to date on what is going on in the world, this music video will not apply to them. My audience expects to visually see the destruction, the literal issues that my protest is looking at, henceforth I will be taking a few trips to areas where pollution and littering is high, such as grays beach and factories, to make sure that I can truly capture what my audience want within my music video.
