NEA Planning task 2 - Mood Board

NEA Planning Part 2 - Mood board

Introduction:

The brief chosen by myself was music videos, which has been my biggest aim and I am required to make both a music video as well as a website. The requirements are as follows:

Brief Requirements:

  • Statement of intent

  • 3 minute music video

  • Distribution channel

  • Number of web pages (homepage and linked page)

  • Cross-media production

  • Clear sense of branding

Music Video Requirements:

  • Range of camera angles

  • Editing of footage

  • Two uses of mise-en-scène

  • Two characters representing two different social groups

  • Graphics/titles for name of track, band/artist

Production of web pages:

  • Original audio or auto-visual content (may include material from music video but must include content made SPERCIFICALLY for the website).

  • Two original images (must be different)

  • Conventions of web design, with title, logo of band/artists web page and menu bar

  • Text introducing band/artist

  • Working links from home page to other page

  • Range of appropriate media language techniques (Typography, images, fonts, backgrounds, logos etc.)

Protest song may be any music that addresses a social, cultural, political or economic issue or may be adopted by a minority or under-represented group as expressing their identity. Allow any music that reasonably may be so defined.

Taking all these requirements into account, I will be creating mood boards for the set requirements. My main photos will be for both the music video AND the websites gallery in which I will be creating. I will be making separate mood boards. One will be about the location I have chosen for the music video, and the other on what type of photos I will be taking. Within this section I will also be taking my OWN pictures, I will be going to the sites and taking photos of locations, stating the advantages/disadvantages I found and putting together the photos to decide what types of photos I want to take, and where would be the best location in which to film and take each of these.

Mood board for Grays Beach

When going to grays beach I took both long shot, close ups and medium shots of litter, fencing, the boats and even found a bridge with graffiti all over it. In my opinion grays beach isn't truly a beach but more like a waste. During my NCS we did a litter pick at grays beach and the number of black sacks full of litter was ridiculous, and that wasn’t the half of it. Grays, in my opinion, is a brilliant place to shoot videos for my music video due to the amount of litter, lack of care and pure disrespect of the town. I plan to film scenes of the beach, taking long shots of the water and boars whilst also filming close ups of litter scattered and possibly going into the town and filming the conditions of the roads and alleyways.

Mood board for Watt Tyler

When going to Wat Tyler a few things I noticed was the powerlines, that were disrupting the beauty of the scenery as well as the graffitied underpass. On the way to Wat Tyler, I saw a small but prominent area which was covered in litter, cigarette buds and most populated in facemasks that had been thrown away and discarded. Wat Tyler is a brilliant place to film due to the route to take to get there, as well as the comments I am about to make on the drone shots.

Mood board of Drone pictures

Within the drone shots we spotted an abandoned ship which, I believe, to be an interesting find, especially for a music video. It has been neglected, it isn’t even a tourist sight, the path to get there is covered in mud, there is no public walkway or access, which I think will be an interesting shot for my video. To reflect on past mistakes from the quote “what I've done”, it was neglected, it was left there for YEARS, and what humanity has done is leave it to rot, which form an environmental point of view is damaging and horrific. As well as this we took pictures of piles of rubbish just found lying in grass as well as this big machinery just sitting in the middle of Wat Tyler. Which I found interesting.

Mood board of Social groups:

Mood board for my social groups represents the age group. I had my brothers sit on a bench and stand either side of a tree in similar poses in hopes to reflect how who we are when we are younger is the same person who you are when you are older, but your ideals and image change. As Joshua (the elder) looks back at what humanity has done, when seeing Theodore (the younger), he is reminded of himself when he was that age and what he, as society, can do. From one act at a time. It shows that despite him being a teenager, we all have a voice. Such as Greta Thunberg, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and Jamie Margolin.

Photography for website:

My final mood board shows photos I have taken for my own entertainment, some being in Switzerland, Wales and even Spain. One image being The Seven Sisters (cliffs within England). I find photography a clear expression of what a camera lens can capture. I went to sea life and took photos of butterflies, sharks and marine life in hopes to show how beautiful life is and that we, as humanity, are affecting their lives. I believe having beautiful and natural photography within my website can give those who view the website a feeling of awe, that the world is beautiful and we must preserve what we can as well as expending the messages, so that the globe can heal and can return to a state of thriving.

Conclusion

When looking at the mood board and my product I noticed that it helped define a list for how my product will be set out, which will help me design my website. When looking at the photography I can work out the layout I have planned out and how I will incorporate that. As well as this it has given me an idea of how and where I will film, as well as the shots I plan to take. I will be looking back at my locations visited and find the perfect spots for filming. The colour scheme will switch between colours. Blue and Green being very prominent so far. However, I feel that black will play a large role since we will be showing environmental struggle and not the fact that it is thriving. The mise-en-scene will not play a large role as I will be using untampered (by myself), natural environments so props and scenery will not be adapted by myself but just by what I see. I will use intertextuality from the style of clothing Linkin Park wear, having my little brother (Joshua) dress up in a black, stereotypically emo attire to reflect the bands purpose and meaning. And finally, I have decided that the media theory I will use is Todrov's theory of narratology. Without a story, or something that conveys message to the audience, there is no personality to the music video. A music video is supposed to represent the lyrics and the emotions of an artist who is presenting their song to their fans/audience/viewers. A music video is for the audience to understand what the artists song means to the artist, whether it has a different meaning to the audience is for them to find out. A story, for me, is the most important as it shows hardships and represents society for how the directors or artists view it. For me, I wish to display a narrative that expresses the youth and is representative of the future generations.
